SASSA War Veteran’s Grant – Complete Guide
The War Veteran’s Grant is a financial assistance program offered by the SASSA. It is designed to support former soldiers who served in the Second World War (1939–1945) or the Korean War (1950–1953).

Who can Apply for War Veteran’s Grant
Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements:
- Be 60 years or older, or be disabled.
- Must have participated in the Second World War or the Korean War.
- Be a South African citizen or permanent resident living in South Africa.
- Applicants should not be receiving any other social grant for themselves.
- Applicants should not be in the care of a state-funded institution.
It’s also important to note that SASSA conducts a means test to assess an applicant’s financial need.
Required Documents for Online Application
- A valid 13-digit bar-coded South African ID. If unavailable, complete an affidavit and submit proof of application for an ID from the Department of Home Affairs.
- Proof of war service, such as a certificate of service.
- A medical report if under 60 and disabled.
- Proof of marital status (e.g., marriage certificate, divorce decree, or spouse’s death certificate).
- Bank statements for the past three months if you have a bank account.
- Documentation of income or unemployment status, such as a UIF blue book or employer discharge certificate.
- Information on investments, dividends, or other financial assets.
How to Apply for the War Veteran’s Grant Online
- Go to the SASSA website at services.sassa.gov.za.
- If you don’t have an account, click on “Registration” and enter your personal details.
- An OTP will be sent to your mobile to complete registration.
- After registration, you can access SASSA services.
- Click “Apply for a Grant” and select the War Veteran’s grant.
- Fill out the application form with your correct ID details.
- Complete the form and the SASSA affidavit.
- Click “Continue to Next Step.”
- You’ll be directed to upload your supporting documents.
- The website will list required documents and show any missing ones.
- Click “Submit Documents.”
- You’ll receive an SMS and email confirmation with a reference number for future inquiries.

On the homepage of SASSA services website you can see status of all applications registered with your account. SASSA also notifies you with SMS and email.
What If War Veteran Grant Is Declined?
If SASSA denies the application, they will provide written reasons for the decision. Applicants have the right to appeal within 90 days of receiving the notice.
How Much Is the War Veteran’s Pension?
From April 2025 the War Veteran’s Grant will be R2340, an increase of R130 announced in the budget speech of financial year 2025/2026.
What Can Lead to Grant Suspension?
The grant may be suspended under the following circumstances:
- Changes in financial or personal circumstances.
- Failure to provide required documentation during a review.
- Fraudulent activity or misrepresentation.
- Administrative errors during the approval process.
When Does the Grant ends?
The War Veteran’s Grant will lapse if:
- The recipient passes away.
- The recipient is admitted to a state institution.
- The grant remains unclaimed for three consecutive months.
- The recipient leaves South Africa permanently.
If a recipient is admitted to an institution that has a contract with the state, the grant amount is reduced to 25% of the total from the fourth month of admission. Full payments are reinstated upon discharge.
